Facelift
Brief Summary
- Duration of the procedure: from 2 to 6 hours depending on the preoperative findings
- Type of anaesthesia: local anaesthetic plus a mild sedative, or general anaesthetic
- Outpatient treatment with medical supervision during the first night
- Presentable after about 10 days
Indication:
- Changes in the distribution of subcutaneous fatty tissue, subsequent sagging of the soft tissues of the face, formation of deep nasolabial folds (between cheeks and nose), and the development of saggy jowls.
- Flattening out of the facial contours
- Excess skin and wrinkles
- Changes in the distribution of subcutaneous fat
- The primary objective is to give the face a fresh, youthful appearance while retaining a natural expression and the person’s individual aura.
Operation:
The facelift incision is hidden at the edge of the cartilage at the front of the ears, runs around the earlobes, behind the back of the ears and into the hair at the back of the head. After tightening of the SMAS, a thin layer of fibrous connective tissue directly underneath the facial skin, excess skin is removed. The skin is stretched only slightly so that there will be little pull on the sutures. That allows for a better for the healing process and results in almost invisible scars.
For a so called S-lift, a very short incision is made in order to lift only the skin and the underlying tissue of the cheek region. In my modification of the ‘lipo-facelift’, excess fat of the face and neck is removed by suction and areas of the face which have lost their subcutaneous bulk are augmented with autologous fat. This produces a perfect balance of skin-tightening, SMAS-lifting and correction of the maldistribution of subcutaneous fat due to aging. The patient’s own fatty tissue is not only a filler but, as bioactive autogenous tissue, it improves the blood flow and contains stem cells that enhance the skin quality.
This elegant procedure is playing an increasingly important role in my very contemporary methods of facial surgery.
After the operation:
- Cool the facial area
- Keep your head raised in order to reduce swelling and prevent bruising
- You may apply make-up after about 5 days
- You may wash your hair after 4 days
- You may dye or colour your hair after 4 weeks
- Sutures are removed after 10 – 14 days
- Post-surgical wound care (with scar massage und possibly self-adhesive silicone pads) begins after suture removal
- Avoid strenuous activities such as sports for 6 weeks
